The buyer decision
Choose product information management, digital asset management or a combined platform according to whether the missing authoritative record is the product or its media.
Criteria & methodologyChoose a PIM when the broken record is the product: attributes, variants, locale-specific descriptions and channel requirements. Choose a DAM when the broken record is the media asset: finding the approved file, identifying its permitted use and delivering the correct rendition. You may need both, but two product labels do not automatically justify two systems.
A catalog team and a brand team can be working on the same product launch while maintaining different records. A product can be complete in one channel and incomplete in another; a photograph can be approved but still be associated with the wrong variant. Define those failures before comparing software.
Compare the decisions, not a category winner
| Requirement | Start with PIM | Start with DAM |
|---|---|---|
| Product attributes and variant relationships | When structured product data is the gap | Do not assume file metadata replaces a product model |
| Required fields by channel or locale | Evaluate catalog completeness and publishing rules | Evaluate only the media part of that requirement |
| Finding approved images/video | May provide product-linked asset functionality | A primary buying question for a broader media library |
| Media variants and brand distribution | Confirm the included asset features | Evaluate rendition and distribution behavior |
| One product with several approved images | Establish product/variant associations | Establish the authoritative asset and its use context |

Six product routes to evaluate
| Product | Documented category route | Why it belongs in the shortlist | Boundary to demonstrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Akeneo | PIM within a broader Product Cloud, including DAM | Product-data-first selection | Which media requirements are included versus separately packaged |
| Pimcore | PIM and DAM domains on a shared platform | Buyers evaluating a combined data/asset approach | Implementation ownership and the actual purchased scope |
| Salsify | Product Experience Management | Product content and commerce-facing requirements | Product-data model and the channels in the proposal |
| Bynder | Digital asset management | A dedicated enterprise media-library evaluation | Asset approval, distribution and product association |
| Canto | Digital asset management | A dedicated DAM buying route | Search, asset organization and the required publishing connection |
| Frontify | Brand platform including asset management | Brand context alongside approved media | Brand governance versus structured catalog requirements |
Akeneo: begin with product information quality
Akeneo PIM documents a product-data model with variants, hierarchies, localization and completeness controls. It also presents DAM as part of its broader Product Cloud.
Evaluate it when the main failure is an incomplete or inconsistent product record. Ask whether the proposed asset scope covers the files and brand workflows you actually need. The presence of an image on a product record is not, alone, proof that the whole organization’s media-governance requirements are satisfied.
Pimcore: a combined platform still needs explicit ownership
Pimcore’s PIM description presents product information alongside DAM and other platform domains. It is a relevant route when the team wants to consider a shared platform rather than assume separate products are necessary.
Use the evaluation to define which team changes a product attribute and which changes an asset’s status. A common platform does not decide those responsibilities for you. Confirm implementation, hosting, edition and ongoing administration in the proposed solution.
Salsify: consider product content in its commerce context
Salsify presents Product Experience Management. It belongs in the evaluation when product content and the requirements of downstream commerce channels are material to the purchase.
Bring the actual retailer/storefront content requirements to the demonstration. Ask which product fields and asset references are authoritative and which channel adjustments remain outside the system. Do not compare a broad PXM proposal with a DAM’s storage allowance as though the products have identical scope.
Bynder: evaluate the media asset as the primary record
Bynder’s DAM product provides a documented dedicated-DAM route. Consider it when teams cannot reliably find and distribute the media they should use.
Demonstrate an approved asset that has several product associations and an updated version. Ask how users distinguish the current permitted file from an old download. Confirm the required product/catalog integration rather than assuming a standalone DAM is a product-information master.
Canto: evaluate the usable asset library
Canto is another dedicated DAM candidate. Use the same representative images, video and naming inconsistencies as in the other demonstrations, rather than accepting a pristine vendor library as proof of fit.
The buying question is whether staff can locate and use the intended media with the right context. Establish the export and publishing requirements before selecting on storage or a search demo alone. Current product packages, permissions and integrations require confirmation in the proposal.
Frontify: compare brand context with catalog structure
Frontify presents a brand platform rather than only a product-data database. Consider this route when approved media must be used in a broader brand context.
Keep the brief honest: a team needing brand distribution and a team needing variant-specific technical specifications have different requirements. Demonstrate both if the proposed platform is expected to cover both; do not let a good brand experience stand in for an unverified structured product model.
Run one launch scenario before buying two systems
Use a fictional product with two variants, two locales and three images. Make one image obsolete and leave a required product attribute incomplete. Ask each vendor to show the relevant record, who may correct it and what reaches the publishing channel.
If a single proposed platform handles both requirements adequately, a separate DAM or PIM may be unnecessary. If separate products are justified, require stable product/asset identifiers and a named owner for wrong or stale associations. A future sponsor should meet these same criteria; it should not be assigned a winning category merely for paying.
Pricing and scope
Request a dated proposal covering products, assets/storage, users, channels, connectors, implementation and support. Do not assume a product’s broad marketing category identifies its full commercial package. Media-rights and regulatory requirements need separate responsible review; an asset library does not itself establish permission to publish.
For an adjacent but different decision, see document management versus digital assets. The proofing versus electronic-signature comparison separates review evidence from signing. Neither replaces the product-versus-media-record choice here.
