The buyer decision
Choose CMMS or FSM category by operating records, excluding protected generic FSM rankings and sector field-service guides.
Criteria & methodologyA CMMS-centered shortlist makes sense when maintaining equipment and organizing maintenance work are the principal requirements. A field-service-management shortlist makes sense when the business must represent customer-site service operations.
There is overlap: both can have work orders and assets. A category name is therefore insufficient. Select the model whose records fit the operating promise.
Compare the central record
| Requirement | Direction to investigate |
|---|---|
| Maintenance work around equipment | CMMS-oriented model |
| Customer and site context for service | FSM-oriented model |
| Repeated work on an identified asset | Inspect both; neither label proves the relationship |
| External customer service commitments | Demonstrate the customer-service record |
| Internal maintenance responsibilities | Demonstrate the asset and work-order record |
This table is an editorial selection framework, not a claim that every product has identical category boundaries.
A business can need both models. Establish the actual requirements before assuming that one broad platform will replace every specialist capability.
Examples from official documentation
MaintainX documents work orders and related work structures. It supplies a maintenance-centered candidate direction. Ask how asset references, recurring work and participant permissions are represented in the proposed edition.
Microsoft documents customer-asset service history in Dynamics 365 Field Service, including work-order incidents associated with customer assets. That illustrates a customer-service direction.
Neither source proves that the other category cannot support a similar relationship. The examples make the record distinction concrete; they are not a vendor ranking.
Evaluate the same asset in two contexts
Use a fictional asset requiring repeated work. First represent internal maintenance responsibility. Then represent work performed for an external customer at a specified site.
Ask the supplier to show the record explaining who requested the work, which asset it concerns and what completion means. Inspect whether the customer relationship is native to the intended model or maintained through a manual convention.
Include a repeat visit. A prior invoice or task title is not automatically a usable asset service history.
Choose the category before comparing products
If the core requirement is maintenance administration, begin there. If the business serves customer sites, require a meaningful customer-service model. Keep unresolved overlapping needs explicit rather than choosing a category solely because it has a familiar acronym.
